Lots of Insect Fun!

We were so excited to be able to get back out to the outdoor classroom on Thursday! The seeds we planted before Passover got moved to our space outside, and the children got to help water the plants. We saw some fun pill bugs in our planter box and talked about how they help break up soil for the plants to be able to grow. The children followed their hard work up with some exploration of the fairy garden and sandbox.

Our friends have been practicing their throwing skills, so we gave them some fun throwing and dropping activities to try. They used the beanbags to knock over some bowling pins on the rocky boat steps. Then we used small balls and cotton balls to drop and throw paint on some plastic table cover that we put on the floor.

The children took our bug counters and smushed them into play dough to make bug prints. They also used pipe cleaners to make bugs out of the play dough.

The children also used paint to make symmetrical paintings. This is always a fun way to teach them about butterfly wings. They painted on half of the paper and then we helped them fold the paper over itself. They used their hands to press the paper down, and were amazed when we opened them up to see what designs were made. Then, they added more paint if they wanted to do so.

Next week, we are looking forward to exploring the world of creepy crawlers a little more with explorations of spiders and caterpillars.
