More Music Fun!

We continued our exploration of music and instruments Tuesday and today!

Tuesday, we used craft sticks to paint as if we were playing drums. The children especially liked watching the paint splat on and off the paper.

We also did another experiment with our littlest scientists. We filled three jars with different levels of water and tapped on the sides to listen to the different tones they made. This also turned into a bit of a painting project as the children found that sticking the craft sticks in the water was as fun as listening to the tones of the jars.

We have been learning about how to be gentle with real instruments as well. The children practiced this while exploring Ms. Krysti's guitar. They learned to gently strum the strings instead of pulling on them, and made some beautiful music.

On Wednesday, we tried to paint with rubber bands by plucking the rubber bands. Again, the children loved watching the paint splat. Ultimately, though, they decided that some collage materials might be more fun.

We worked on fine motor skills and a little bit of counting by "stringing" some instruments. We counted four strings on a violin and found out there are so many strings on the harp.

We got to sing and play some "Wheels on the Bus" today!

And we brought back our dancing rice for our friends who did not get to experience it on Monday! "Don't Stop Me Now" got the biggest reaction with the children dancing right along with the rice. They thought it was funny that the rice started slow and then danced fast as the tempo accelerated.

Just a few more pictures of the Katon littles exploring and having fun with friends. We see more and more social interaction every day!

Music and Instruments!

We were so excited to start our exploration of music and instruments today!

The children started right away with exploring the different instruments on our provocation table.

We spent some time working on our fine motor skills by "writing songs" with stickers. Ms. Krysti is hoping to be able to bring her keyboard in one day this week so we can hear what we composed.

We spent some time exploring some child-sized instruments.

We also learned about Australian clapping sticks. We listened to indigenous people from Australia play the clapping sticks while chanting. The children loved dancing to the music. Then we painted some clapping sticks that we can use in the classroom to make some more music.

The Katon kiddos are becoming quite the scientists and love a good experiment. Today's experiment helped us answer the question "How is sound made?" Ms. Krysti put our bluetooth speaker in a bowl and covered it with cling wrap. Then we poured some rice on top. When the music played through the speaker, the rice started to jump and "dance." We talked about the vibrations of the sound making the grains of rice move. Vibration is a big word for some of our littles, but they tried their best to repeat the word.

What a Year!

What a year it has been! The children in Katon started out as "Covid babies."  They had grown up mostly around their families and...
