Shapes in Art

We know the Katon kids love to paint and explore with all the art materials. So what better way to extend our exploration of shapes by exploring shapes we find in art. This morning the children started a project based on Mondrian's famous painting "Broadway Boogie-Woogie." They used old gift cards dipped in a mix of black paint and glue to make marks on their papers with the edge of the card. We will let these dry and add more to them later in the week.

The children also used magnatiles to make art on metal baking sheets. They liked turning the pans upside-down and thought it was funny that the shapes did not fall off.

"I made a slide!"

We put pictures of famous artwork showing shapes like Paul Klee's "Red Balloon" and Kadinsky's "Verigation in the Triangle" on the easel. The children were given color pencils and asked to make their own art on the paper. They had fun drawing circles and lines!
